Optimizing Lubricity in Plated Fasteners
It is understandable to prefer that a single torque tension modifier could be utilized for various applications by diluting the solution to adjust the coefficient of friction (CoF). However, this would not work to achieve desired goals because the final CoF depends on multiple factors beyond just the concentration. In order to understand these factors, we should first consider the functional application of the coating and its role in the plating process.
From the standpoint of electroplated fasteners, torque tension modifi ers are often the fi nal piece of the puzzle. They are typically applied following passivation of the electroplated deposit. These coatings provide a number of diff erent features including enhanced gloss, better durability, greater corrosion resistance and a more uniform fi nish. The most important property of these topcoats is their ability to provide the proper amount of lubricity (or slip) for fastener installation.
