Turning up the Heat on Thread Rolling
Thread rolling is generally thought of as a cold forming process that is carried out at room temperature. However, when it comes to fasteners made of high-strength materials such as Inconel, Waspaloy and A286, which are sensitive to strain hardening, especially in critical applications where thread rolling must be carried out after heat treatment of the fastener blank, the cold rolling process can limit manufacturability, quality and tool life. Surface tearing, slivers and premature die wear are common concerns, and these challenges leave little room for setup errors or process variation, along with increased tooling costs. That’s why Kinefac Corporation is turning the heat up on thread rolling to address these challenges.
